One of the fundamental mistakes amateur golfers make when they approach the green is to try to "hit" the ball. Steve, what are you talking about?! If you're swing thought is to "hit the ball" one of two things will happen. You'll either ground your club (i.e., digging a hole with the head of your club large enough to plant a small tree in) or smack the ball over the green and onto the next tee.
