HI Malcolm.
I’ve always loved applying common sense over my 30 year teaching career and this is one of the best examples. If two different clubs are two different lengths and have different lie angles there’s just no way that they will swing down and hit the ground at the same spot. A 3-iron for example is 3 inches longer than a 9 iron and has a much flatter lie angle so the bottom of your swing arc will naturally be up closer to your lead heel. The 9-iron with it’s shorter length and more upright lie will swing up more during the backswing and down a bit steeper on the downswing which lends it to hitting further back. It just has to. I begin with the 7 iron being dead center then move the ball forward a 1/2 inch for each longer club and back for each shorter club. So your 6 iron will be just a 1/2 inch forward of dead center and your 8 iron a half inch back. I’ve never in 45,000 lessons had a student that doesn’t immediately strike the ball more solid when the use this theory and common sense tells me there’s no other way. Keep me updated and thanks.

Steve – I don’t understand the point you are making about ball position moving with the club length. I would have thought that the club hits the ground at the centre of your spine angle whatever the length – unless it is a driver hitting a ball on a tee. However, I would assume that the ball position moves towards you as the club length decreases unless you stoop lower. Where am I going wrong with this thought?

Thanks Derrick. Always good to see how well you hit the ball.
